The Case Against Facebook

Facebook is not going through its best time, at least in terms of problems with different organizations. An investigation has been launched against Facebook for violations of antitrust law. The investigation will be led by Letita James, New York State Attorney General.

This is the latest step to address Facebook's increasingly worrying influence and power, which led to its co-founder asking forthe company to intervene. The research team will include attorney generals from Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Nebraska, North Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee and the District of Columbia.

A statement from the same prosecutor specifies that the investigation will focus on the "Facebook domain in the industry and the possible anti-competitive conduct derived from that domain". This isn't Facebook's first problem with American justice: this very summer it had to pay $5 billion for data leakage.
They're investigating Facebook... Once again. This time for possible violations of antitrust law.

The investigation will also seek to clarify whether Facebook compromised its consumer data. As the prosecutor said she will lead the investigation:
"I'm starting research on Facebook to determine whether their actions compromised consumer data, reduced consumer choice quality, or increased the price of advertising."

Facebook's historic fine was nothing more than the start of these political movements to control Facebook's influence. Facebook agreed with the FTC on a new management structure and rules on how it manages user data and on the same day, Facebook itself confirmed in its earnings report that the Commission had opened an antitrust investigation.

In addition, The Wall Street Journal confirmed that the FTC was analyzing Facebook acquisitions such as WhatsApp or Instagram as part of the investigation. Facebook will not be the only one to receive an antitrust investigation: the Washington Post says the FTC will open an antitrust investigation against Google led by more than 25 prosecutors.
